Is the water hot because of what LeBron quoted? Or also because LeBron, who also has 41.8 million followers at his @KingJames Twitter handle, is the most influential athlete in all of sports — one whose messages resonate in far bigger arenas than the ones he dominates for his day job? On and off the court, LeBron makes international news. He’s been an economic and cultural force since he was in high school. Today, he’s a cultural and political gatekeeper — at icon status. When posting, he speaks to more than a hundred million people (he has platforms beyond Twitter and IG), and James lives a version of The Truman Show. But, despite Avenger-like feats on the court, even this deep into a career, he is still human.
Then came local Hispanic leaders, worried that cannabis would lead to raids from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement because the federal government still considers it illegal. The local Catholic Church and public school leaders wanted the measure blocked, too, saying it would erode the community in a way that can’t be easily reversed. People were holding up signs. The backlash had begun.
Sunda, CBD: Vegemite curry with roti Ellen Fraser, Melbourne editor On my first visit to Sunda I knocked back the offer of a Vegemite curry special and was promptly filled with regret. When I returned, it was with a mission. This dish is a rough, golden-tan twist of broken roti next to a wodge of highly concentrated, coppery-brown curry. Chef Khanh Nguyen says it’s made with the usual suspects you’d get in a curry, but along with the Vegemite he adds butter, roasted yeast and sour cream. A well in the centre is filled with shimmering red curry oil. It’s spectacular.
Chestnuts add a festive feel to this lentil stuffing, with a flavour nod to the East. Season carefully, as the tamari and miso both bring their own saltiness. Tahini is added for extra flavour and nutrients and to thicken the sauce; if it gets a little too thick, just let it down with a splash of water. The chestnut mixture and the kale can both be reheated if you’re speedy at the stove and they’re ready before the squash is cooked.

Currently, Ouriel is experimenting with a sunscreen and a lip balm, but she plans to keep the line relatively spare. She spends a few hours every day not in the lab but at her computer, answering skin-care questions from blog readers. Microneedling? Avoid. Microcurrent? Enjoy. “I feel it’s my duty to clear the lake of misinformation,” she says. On the weekends, she makes time to visit the racetrack in Arcadia (her father owns a horse racing company) and play with friends in a punk-rock bowling league (her favorite black-metal band is Dissection). “Sometimes we’ll order junk food, but I don’t drink,” she says. “It’s very damaging to the epidermis.”
This mom-and-pop neighborhood spot offers approachable, scratch-made fare made with classic techniques. Recent fresh sheet items include pan-seared duck breast, pulled pork ravioli with mole sauce, borscht, lemongrass herbed beef, carrot-ginger soup and apple bread pudding. Dishes are contemporary and eclectic American with some Asian, Spanish and Pacific Northwest influences. The menu is streamlined. Rotating house-made ravioli are a signature dish. So is the chicken and sticky rice served with potatoes and fresh green curry, made from a paste with ginger, garlic, coconut milk, cilantro and lime. The look is casual and minimalist. The long rectangular space is sparsely decorated. Corrugated metal lines the bar. Shelves are made from repurposed pallets. The floor is dark hardwood. The ceiling is black. Walls are neutral. Chairs and stools are red metal. A community table that seats 12 sits in the front window. The restaurant is the realization of a shared dream of a husband-and-wife team. Tony and Raelene Elliott live in the neighborhood within walking distance of their eatery and shop at the Emerson-Garfield Farmers Market during farmers market season. The $9 lunch specials are a great deal. 2209 N. Monroe St. (509) 866-0850.

The vibe is relaxed and casual, the service is friendly, and the wheat noodles are house-made. But I can’t get enough of the entire menu.
