Why can’t we eat sunflower seeds whole? Great question. I know about this one firsthand since I became hooked on sunflower seeds (and their hulls, as the shells are technically called), back in the summer after fourth grade. My summer camp took a field trip to a minor league baseball game, and as a special treat, gave out sunflower seeds to all of us to eat at the game. I thought chewing and spitting out the sunflower seed was so gross that I decided to eat the sunflower seed whole — kernel, hull, everything. Besides, the outside is the part that’s salted and tastes the best to a kid like me anyway. Great idea, right?

My favorite might be the Nantucket bay scallops ($42), tossed with a chewy, textural mix of potato, hominy and chicos, spiked with a bit of poblano chile and topped with paper-thin slivers of spicy Spanish chorizo. The scallops may be supple, but this dish bites back.
None seem to remain for long, but among the best were a monster wedge of bone-in roasted monkfish ($37), flanked by simple roasted cauliflower and sugar snap peas with a smear of creamy labne and a lightly curried butternut squash puree.

Check and stir it towards the end, adding a splash more water if needs be. While it cooks, wash, peel and dice the potatoes into 2-3cm chunks. Put them in a pan of cold water. Season well with salt and bring the pan to the boil. Cook for 10-12 minutes or so, until the potatoes are soft when pierced with a sharp knife. Once cooked, drain into a colander. Leave in the colander for 2 minutes to allow excess water to evaporate.

Lakewood Think you’re busy? Paul Fleischer probably has you beat. The full-time agriculture and special-needs teacher at Alameda International Jr./Sr. High School also farms a half-acre plot in Lakewood, tends a productive apiary, runs a CSA program, hosts on-property workshops, classes, and special events, and keeps his farm stand stocked with CFA products. (Not to mention parenting two young children with his wife, Chelsie.) The Fleischers hope to double down on their urban farm dream by buying 1.2 acres adjacent to their current plot in February, but in the meantime, the CFA allows them to “fill in the gaps and offer more variety,” Fleischer says. That translates to raspberry jam from the couple’s sprawling berry patch, eggs from their free-range chickens, and raw honey from the farm’s hives. But be forewarned: The Fleischers’ CFA products have a devoted neighborhood following. “We never have enough,” Fleischer says. He hopes the purchase of the additional acreage will remedy that problem—and allow him to make the switch to working their land full time.
