Taco Bell recently released the limited edition Watermelon Freeze just in time for the start of summer on Thursday, June 21, and there’s no shortage of sweet and fruity flavor. The frozen pink beverage is blended with ice for a deliciously refreshing taste of watermelon. The Watermelon Freeze is basically like scarfing down a juicy piece of watermelon, but this time in the form of a cup (and minus all of those pesky black seeds that tend to get in the way).

You can imagine then how ill-matched this pipi and I were after a few hours spent on the house reds the night before. But the first dish I tried in the hushed, subdued dining room of Japanese fine diner Kazuki’s really blew my mind. A single raw pipi, spiked with ginger and a snifter of soy, served in the shell. It’s clean, sweet, brine-y and lively all at once – not quite doctor ocean, but damn near close enough.
I baked a new batch of crispbreads this week, the texture of pebbledash, knobbly with pumpkin seeds and oats, and used them as a base for a coarse paté of grated beetroot and smoked mackerel. We ate them with glasses of prosecco turned rose pink by the addition of pomegranate juice. There were chubby little muffins, too, studded with pine kernels and rosemary and passed round with glasses of hot cider. A practice run for Boxing Day morning.
“You can use it in so many savory applications like pastas, filling, breads, soups, and side dishes,” he says. “I have personally used it in a few pasta dough recipes, agnolotti and ravioli fillings, and even folded it into risotto.”
