Build your lasagna in a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Start with a layer of sauce, then top with a layer of noodles. Evenly spread half of the pumpkin filling, then half of the zucchini, over the noodles. Top with half of the cheese mixture and cover with some of the sauce. Repeat the layers, finishing with noodles and sauce; sprinkle with the remaining 1 cup mozzarella. Bake, uncovered, 35 to 40 minutes, or until bubbly. Let cool 15 minutes before slicing.

“Filter?” Moko asks, motioning to the drip-coffee machine—a rarity in the city’s classic sidewalk cafés. Typically, she will have the coffee brewed before I get there, but because it’s still early, she flips the switch as soon as I give her the go-ahead. Likewise, if you thumb through a seed catalogue for organic farmers and gardeners, the characteristics they tout for their seeds address the same issues over and over: disease resistance, frost resistance, pest resistance and germination timing. Elsewhere the needs are similarly straightforward: salt tolerance, drought tolerance, flood tolerance and greater nutrition for staple crops. Of the big agronomic breeding challenges, only herbicide tolerance is a challenge novel to contemporary times. At the grandest scale, achieving the efficiency of photosynthesis in crops like corn and sugarcane for any crop and nitrogen fixation for any crop seem to verge on science fiction for their ambition, it remains the case that those dreams merely involve moving what nature already does into a wider range of crops.

Lakewood Think you’re busy? Paul Fleischer probably has you beat. The full-time agriculture and special-needs teacher at Alameda International Jr./Sr. High School also farms a half-acre plot in Lakewood, tends a productive apiary, runs a CSA program, hosts on-property workshops, classes, and special events, and keeps his farm stand stocked with CFA products. (Not to mention parenting two young children with his wife, Chelsie.) The Fleischers hope to double down on their urban farm dream by buying 1.2 acres adjacent to their current plot in February, but in the meantime, the CFA allows them to “fill in the gaps and offer more variety,” Fleischer says. That translates to raspberry jam from the couple’s sprawling berry patch, eggs from their free-range chickens, and raw honey from the farm’s hives. But be forewarned: The Fleischers’ CFA products have a devoted neighborhood following. “We never have enough,” Fleischer says. He hopes the purchase of the additional acreage will remedy that problem—and allow him to make the switch to working their land full time. Soviet sunflower breeders used naturally occurring variation within the annual sunflower to make commercial progress. But by the mid 20th century, North American breeders were taking a different approach, crossing wild and cultivated sunflower species to exploit the yield advantages associated with hybrid vigour. Today, most commercial sunflower farmers grow hybrid sunflower seed.

"We are confident that through our work, in conjunction with external experts, we have identified and eliminated the root causes of the contamination and therefore resumed production of roasted sunflower kernel products at our facility in Crookston (Minnesota)," Jacobs added.

Stepping into that void is Alcove, the new spot from owner Tom Schlesinger-Guidelli, a storied Boston hospitality pro backed by a team of veterans that features exec chef Maxime Fanton (ex-Pagu) and GM Brendan Collins (ex-Island Creek). The space, located in the base of a new luxury condo tower at Lovejoy Wharf, features a cozy modern room in grays, beiges and dark blues with dim light flatteringly bouncing off copper and steel accents and warm woods and comfortable spacing at a big textured-schist bar. A waterfront patio with a breathtaking panorama of the Charles River and the Zakim and Charlestown bridges awaits warmer weather.

On Sunday afternoon viewers were treated to an unusual sight — a giant pumpkin seed harvest. At 1pm sharp, Geddes zipped himself into a white hazmat-like suit, stuck a flashlight between his teeth, and shimmied into the belly of the pumpkin to gather the squash’s precious seeds. At one point he called in backup, and a second man zipped up and joined him in the hollowed-out pumpkin. While Geddes wasn’t sure if it was the first time two grown men have been in a pumpkin together, he was fairly certain it was the first time the phenomena had happened at the Botanical Gardens.
