Denver David Kaminer was the kind of kid who regularly made breakfast in bed for his parents, so it’s no surprise that, years later, the Pittsburgh-raised teen attended culinary school. Today Kaminer is drawing on his pedigree to craft superb naturally leavened loaves, using organic ingredients and freshly milled grains, from his home hearth in northwest Denver. “I started the bakery to make the products I want to eat,” Kaminer says. His pumpkin will be displayed at a fair in Milford this weekend. Then, if it holds its place as one of the three heaviest pumpkins in the world by next week, it will be moved to the New York Botanical Garden in NYC, where the three finalists will be shown before being carved into works of art.

Boscawen resident Steven Geddes certainly qualifies as an expert on this last species, having grown the second-largest giant pumpkin in the world, a beast weighing in at a gargantuan 2,528 pounds. Only one behemoth, cultivated in Belgium back in 2012, beat his record – by a mere 96 pounds.

All three of Brogan’s gins are killer, but the Royal Blood (their navy strength) is a big, viscous beast that’s as good by itself as in any cocktail. Currently, Ouriel is experimenting with a sunscreen and a lip balm, but she plans to keep the line relatively spare.
