As children, many of us were warned in jest that swallowing watermelon seeds would make melons grow in our bellies.
I like to add sand around the planting area for drainage. It’s hard to believe such a large plant and pumpkin comes from this little seed. Thank you Steve Geddes in NH for giving me the opportunity to grow this seed. It came from a pumpkin he grew two years ago that weighed 2066 lbs.

Geddes says he planted the seeds for the giant pumpkin back in April of this year, and by the time the pumpkin was ready to be harvested, the plant—which bore only one fruit— extended across 1,300 square feet. Geddes described the leaves of the mature plant as “elephant-ear sized.”

The Mullers grow 60 varieties of pumpkins, gourds and squash, including Cinderellas, Fairytales and Tonda Padanas. They plant 80,000 seeds each spring, and each seed can produce up to four pumpkins. Harvest takes one month, and then the pumpkins are sold at a plot called Farmer John’s Pumpkins on the Pacific Coast Highway, where visitors can see the ocean peeking across a crest of trees.
