If you are not a fan of gulping the seeds with the fruit, you can soak them in water overnight, and then dry and shell the cover. In fact, sprouted watermelon seeds are treasure houses of protein too!

For every drink I pour, there has to be something to eat. It is a rule, a way of life. Thin slices of jamón ibérico with a tiny glass of sherry, some curls of gravlax with frivolous bubbles, and maybe something along the lines of a punch with plump, parmesan-crusted muffins.

Meaty mains are similarly robust. Here’s hoping the Iberico pluma ($39) returns, succulent premium pork supported by earthy bass notes like miso-marinated eggplant, peanuts and scallion ash. Meanwhile, I’ll happily dig on a roasted poussin ($37), over cannellini beans studded with fall cherries, cranberries and chewy chicos — dried and rehydrated corn kernels.

Sunflower Seeds. Black-oil sunflowers seeds are the best single food for wild birds. These small, thin-shelled seeds are easy to open, rich in fat and protein, and inexpensive. Virtually every bird that visits a backyard bird feeder eats black-oil seeds. Striped sunflower seeds are larger and have thicker shells than oil seeds. They are favorites of cardinals, jays, and woodpeckers, and can be cast on the ground or presented in tube or hopper style feeders.

Often associated with better digestive health, these seeds can provide nutrients like fiber, protein, and omega-3 fatty acids. They are also considered a good source of lignans — these phytochemicals are shown to have the potential to reduce the growth of tumors and possibly reduce the risk of cancer.

Add a splash of water if it looks like it might. Meanwhile, wash, peel and trim the base of the Brussels sprouts. Cut them in half through the root, then into thin shreds, discarding the stalk base. Wash and finely shred 8-10 sage leaves, depending on size. Preheat oven to 210˚C/Gas Mark 6.
