Nivea chapstick, peppermint soap, two large white t-shirts, and hair clippers take care of the appearance. The food? Breads, rolls, and jellies. One bottle of honey.
About 2.3 million Pennsylvanians were counted among the country’s backyard birders in 2011, the last time a state-focused report was drawn out of that national survey.
Add the roasted seeds to your next salad, yogurt bowl, or even slice of toast for an element of crunch and hint of nutty flavor.
They drink a lot of water. That might be where the luck Radach credited for his prize-winning pumpkin comes in — that Baldwin has an understanding wife.
As children, many of us were warned in jest that swallowing watermelon seeds would make melons grow in our bellies.
As for the rind, it serves well as a crunchy component, too, whether tossed into a stir fry or pickled and plated alongside a sandwich or smoky BBQ. A pickled rind creates a great salad topper.
Travis Dickinson, the former executive chef at Clover, and Justin Curtis, the former front-of-the-house manager at Clover, teamed up to open a fast-casual but gourmet walk-up counter taco shop in downtown Spokane. The setting is fun and approachable, with a Day-of-the-Dead-style logo and murals. Tacos are served on 5-inch corn tortillas that are made in-house. Salsas and sauces – such as salsa verde, guacamole and a pumpkin seed salsa – are also made in-house. So are the tortilla chips, aguas frescas and horchata. Tacos include pork cheek carnitas, al pastor, lamb birria, carne asada, chicken, mushroom, chorizo, rockfish and (my favorite) octopus. Karina’s Bowl, named for Dickinson’s wife, features a choice of taco meat, beans, rice, guacamole, queso fresco, crema, pico de gallo and chips or tortillas. Margaritas are a specialty. So is the Watermelon Man, with tequila, lime, cider vinegar, watermelon, simple syrup and tajin, a chile-lime seasoning. 10 N. Post St. (509) 474-9618. cochinitotaqueria.com.

Kind of like when I buy a lottery ticket. Recently, I picked up two of those small, rotund watermelons. They were nestled together in the same bin, in the same store, and had the same sticker on their rind. The one I gave my mom was sweet and juicy. The one I saved for myself was the worst — mushy and flavourless. It was the kind of watermelon that makes you sad and vow you’ll never buy again. But, when you get a melon like that of my mom’s — sweet, juicy, ripe, and no mush in sight — it’s the stuff of summertime bliss.
The meatiest dish on the menu, ironically, might be the black bean soup ($13). The broth, spiked with black garlic and serrano chiles, is a full-flavored one, to be sure. But it’s plied with enough tender braised belly and silky lamb fat that it carries more pure, intense, meaty flavor than any rack of lamb I’ve had this year. The soup looks skinny, but it packs a heavyweight punch.
