Arvada & Lakewood While most kids erect lemonade stands in their front yards, Kelly Conley’s and Ginny Kooyman’s children are more likely to be found selling scones and other treats that their mothers bake each week for their four-month-old CFA bakery, Counter Currant. Arvada-based Conley and Kooyman, a Lakewood resident, first crossed paths five years ago at a home-school meetup, where they bonded over their shared love of all things DIY—including baking. “Now we just bake a lot more,” Kooyman says. “[Counter Currant] gives both of us the flexibility to work on a level that works for us.” Their selections—apple pies, pear tarts, sticky fig cake, chocolate shortbread—change weekly, often star local produce, and there are always gluten-free options available. The mamas’ can-do venture is even inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurs: Kooyman’s 13- and 11-year-olds and Conley’s 12-year-old are teaming up to launch a CFA-certified granola line this month. How To Buy: Weekly menus can be found via @counter.currant’s Instagram account; prices range from $6 for two croissants to $27 for a 10-inch pie. Order online by Thursday for Saturday pickup in Lakewood or Arvada.
These green-hued nuts come from a tree that is native to western Asia, and evidence suggests that they were consumed as early as 7,000 BC. In Persia (now called Iran), pistachios symbolized wealth and high status, and in later years they were introduced to countries such as Greece, Italy, and Spain. As pistachios grow, the shell naturally cracks open halfway, making it quick and easy to reach the nut inside! Pistachios are lower in fat and calories than most other nuts, and are an excellent source of vitamin B6, which assists in the formation of hemoglobin, a molecule that helps carry oxygen in red blood cells. They are also the only nut that contain a high amount of carotenoids, which help contribute to eye health.

One argument says that James overreacted, that it is hypocritical for an athlete being paid millions of dollars to use such incendiary language. It’s not racism, it’s just how businesses operate, it is argued. Yet, given the NFL’s track record regarding issues of race in the era of Colin Kaepernick’s exile, James’ idea of the NFL’s corporate hierarchy, right or wrong, isn’t an uncommon one at the barbershop, dinner table, bar or any safe space where people, in particular black people, congregate.

The second largest, which he named Jill, is about 400 pounds. The three others are more portly than the average pumpkin.
